INTRODUCTION

Redefining the Digital Training Experience for CrossFit Athletes

CompTrain is a leading CrossFit training platform built for athletes who want to push their limits every day. My goal for this UX/UI redesign was to create a digital experience that mirrors the intensity and was clear, motivating, and built for progress.

Through research, journey mapping, and interface refinement, I helped CompTrain deliver a seamless training experience that keeps athletes focused on what matters most: improving performance.

Auditing Current Interface

The first step in this project was conducting a comprehensive audit of CompTrain’s existing app experience. I gathered feedback from active users and the CompTrain team to understand key frustrations and desired improvements.

Three main topics surfaced:

  • Limited customization options for different training programs and athlete goals

  • Goal to expand community with gym/public feed, PR board, mindset video library, and more

  • Updated branding needed to be applied

I mapped two user flows: competitive CrossFit athletes and gym goers seeking high-intensity workouts. I identified gaps in accessibility and engagement. Both user groups needed quick, intuitive access to programming, progress tracking, mindset content, and their broader community.

REDESIGNING THE INTERFACE

Wireframing new workout sections

With the workout of the day at the heart of CompTrain’s experience, this phase of the redesign focused on making training more personalized, flexible, and motivating for every athlete. The goal was to give users the ability to tailor their workouts to their time, skill level, and goals, without losing the structured feel that defines CompTrain programming.

In the original design, the workout tracks were static. Athletes couldn’t easily adjust duration or intensity, and finding alternate workout options felt clunky. Through user feedback, it became clear that this lack of flexibility created friction, especially for athletes training around busy schedules or varying fitness levels.

I began by wireframing new interaction flows that prioritized choice and clarity. Each day’s workout offered multiple training tracks based on subscription level, giving users a clear sense of what was available — and what could be unlocked by upgrading. The wireframes also introduced a smoother browsing experience, allowing users to preview workouts, filter by time, and switch tracks without losing their progress.

TRAINING LEADERBOARDS

Increasing engagement on the leaderboards

PUBLIC FEED

Community & Motivation

A major goal of the redesign became enhancing community connection and allowing athletes to engage with a public feed, whether within their gym or across the global CompTrain network. This shift aimed to transform the app from a one-way training tool into a social, motivational training ecosystem.

We worked on adding social aspects to the leaderboard, PR board, and workouts to make training feel more connected and community-driven. When viewing a WOD, users can now leave comments, share feedback, and engage with others about their training experience.

This simple interaction transformed workouts from a solo activity into a shared moment within the CompTrain community.

PERSONAL RECORDS

Telling a story through thoughtful design

When wireframing the onboarding flow, I treated it like the beginning of a story. The experience guides users through why they are here, what their impact can be, and who they are, carefully introducing the importance of their story and setting the tone for the rest of the app.

I started by identifying the different types of users the app would serve. From a elder grandparent looking to preserve their life memories or an individual looking to share their legacy for generations to come, we needed to make prompts and prompt customization feel comfortable. Recognizing that each user would engage with the app for different reasons, I focused on creating tools and flows that were accessible, intuitive, and supportive.

The Results

Legacy is set to launch early next year, and I’m very excited to see how it will help preserve memories and stories for generations. Working on projects like Legacy reminds me of the real-world impact thoughtful UX/UI can have.

This was truly a passion project for me and brought out the best in my skill set—both visually and functionally. I’ll be sure to update this once it goes live!
